John S. has it right, it is very hard to get passed the nutty whims out there.
Philip, I think you are on target with the insight of; Revelation being written for us as a guide in actively following Christ. One resource I would recommend, and it might be a little outside your experience is ‘The Lamb’s Supper’ by Scott Hahn. Dr. Hahn’s book points the way of interpreting the passages so we can apply them to our lives.

One thing I liked about Jon's presentation was his comment about how long he had stayed away from the book of Revelation until he did the initial sermon series that eventually became his book. Alot of us stay away from the book because we assume we have no way of getting anything out of it without turning into one of those nutty date-setters, or those who find a prophecy fulfilled in everyone of their paranoid whims and prejudices. After listening to his talk, it reminded me of what happens when we don't step into the dialogue: by default, the only voices out there are the ones of a very vocal minority, and we end up adopting that view because we've never taken the time to inquire for ourselves.

I'm not done thinking yet... don't know if I ever will be. It's all very interesting. I think application is the point. Like everything else. Application, application, application. A never-ending To Do list... but it's not as bad as all that.
